Title: New to Fiction Writing, Late in Life
Post by: MiggsEye on September 03, 2014, 10:01:01 AM
Cheers.

By day I'm an architect. By night I take care of my elderly mom, while finding time for family and friends, cooking, movies, reading, creating and general "joie de vivre". Amidst this smorgasbord of life, finding a way for creative outlet is challenging. I've been a visual artist my whole life. But paints have a tendency to dry out when one is called away for a caretaking emergency. I've found writing to be a rather practical solution for my creative dilemma. I can still paint pictures, just the medium has changed: words instead of paint. When I'm called away for an emergency, it's an easy medium to drop in a flash and the cursor is still there waiting --  blinking at me 5, 10, 20 minutes or an hour later.

So maybe I'll realize a childhood dream of traveling the world and writing murder mysteries a la "Agatha Christie" after all? In the meantime, I'm cutting my teeth on general short pieces. Flash fiction. Fiction I can write in a flash between life emergencies.

I welcome and enjoy feedback as I have much to learn and an eager desire to share.

Hi MiiggsEye,

Welcome to MWC.

As you like flash fiction, I thought you might like to dive in and do in the latest flash fiction challenge that has opened today. Find the details here:
http://mywriterscircle.com/index.php?topic=54854.0 (http://mywriterscircle.com/index.php?topic=54854.0)

Challenges are anonymous - unless you win - and are a great way to cut your teeth if you're a little nervous.

Hope you have fun with us.

Welcome to the circle, there are several of us here who were visual artists and are now trying our hands at writing.

creativity isn't confined to specific tools or methods.  ;D

Great place to learn and be encouraged. Glad you found us.

Thank you Distant Sun. I submitted my entry yesterday. First time I've ever submitted my writing to anything like that. Here goes nothing...

Welcome to our quiet little corner of the Big Bad Web, where an amazing amount of good stuff gets done amidst the messing around in the coffee shop and the 'games' threads.

Starting late should be an advantage to a writer, in that you'll have a lot more life experience to draw upon compared to some some ambitious young whippersnapper from the keyboard generation who has never dipped a pen into a school inkwell, or similar.  Okay, you may not be that old, but experience gives the older writer a rich well to dip into.

You'll find plenty of joi de vivre here amongst the more serious moments.

Gyppo

Good on ya Brendan!! Braver than me (took me longer to work up the courage to submit one).

Thank you Gyppo.

Thank you Distant Sun.

FYI:
The Flash Fiction Contest #90 voting thread is up now. There are 6 stories. Since it's an anonymous contest I'm not going to say which entry is mine. But I encourage everyone to go on over there and read the stories -- each is 600 words or less. Vote for the one you think is the best story. It would be a great feeling to be a newbie here and win the contest. The first writing contest of any kind I've ever entered. Cheers, Brendan.

Hello Miggs,

I have only been here a month. For decades I've been flirting with the idea of writing fiction and finally, now into the early stages of my seventh, I'm at least doing something tangible about it. I'm hoping Gyppo's right ... he usually is.

Sincere welcome to you.

Thank you Soul Writes. Go for it. I'm brand new to fiction writing and I submitted an entry into the Flash Fiction contest that's up now. It's an anonymous contest, but consider reading them and voting for the one that's the best story.

Cheers, Brendan.

While I'm not new here, it's been awhile since I've posted actively. So I thought I'd reintroduce myself again and explain why I've been away.

As I noted in my initial introduction, I've been taking care of my Mom for years. My participation here declined over the last months as her health began to decline. She accumulated a whole series of little nuisance conditions and after 94 years she was just tuckered out. We brought her home to hospice care on a Friday a few weeks ago. She died the following Wednesday surrounded by her family and all the people and things she loved.

While I miss her enormously and grief still surrounds me,  I suddenly have more time to write and participate here. So I just wanted to say hello again and hope to see you all on the boards.

Hey, Miggsie. Please accept my deepest condolences. After so many years with someone close, it leaves a hole that seems impossible to fill. Writing will help. Welcome back. I missed your helpful critiques and sense of humor.

Thanks AQ and Jewel. AQ I was working on a crit of your first book/first draft or edition and never got it back to you. My apologies. If you're still interested in it, I'll pass it on now that I have time to finish it.

Send me what you've already finished. You don't need to stress over the rest since it's been doing ok on Amazon. I will take a rain check though and send you a draft of the prequel and sequel. Both are stalled at the moment since my wife passed two months ago so it will be a while. Just starting to get back to a writing routine.

Looking forward to seeing you on the boards, Miggsie.

Oh, AQ. Here you are offering me your condolence and you've suffered a great loss yourself. I am so sorry for your loss. Being of one body in marriage, the loss of a spouse is exceptionally deep and one I can only begin to imagine. Please accept my sincere condolences.

Anyone who has suffered loss will have an inkling what you're going through, Miggs. I'm so sorry.  :-*

I hope you can channel your grief into some writing. It can be remarkably therapeutic.

Thank you, Miggsie. More than a half century together. We first met in junior high school. Leaves a big hole but so many friends, especially here at MWC, are helping me find a path forward.

Laura is right about writing, but I'm sure you know that. So dive in and create.

Warmest regards,
AQ

AQ. You hinted at your age. Up till now, through your writing, I thought you were a brilliant and brash twenty-something writer. Now, by your confession, I see you are a wise and storied man with the heart and soul of a brilliant, brash twenty-something writer. You amaze me.

Twernt nothin, Miggsie. My writing is a tell about the immaturity of my mind.  ;D. The body, on the other hand, feels quite old most days, especially when cold, damp weather sets in here on the Cape. I'm heading for LA to live with my daughter and son-in-law. Plan to mix it up with the dudes on Venice Beach. Lift a few weights, ride a few waves, peel off a few years. Actually, the weight-lifting and surfing is just a product of my immature mind. Can't control it. Best I get back to Charley Manner and friends. There's no end to the action. Incidentally, my daughter is a screenwriter. Maybe we'll collaborate and turn TOTS into a movie? As Steven Tyler of Aerosmith fame sang: Dream On. I'm showing my age again.  ::)

Best,
AQ
