Title: Tales from the Lake horror short story competition - 2013
Post by: Joe Mynhardt on August 01, 2013, 08:57:02 AM
As owner and operator of Crystal Lake Publishing, I'd like to invite all MWC members to enter the very first (of hopefully many) Tales from the Lake competition. Write your way through three rounds of judging to win your share of the prize money, a spot in the anthology, a contributorís copy, other signed books and more. The current TOC consists of Graham Masterton, Taylor Grant, John Paul Allen, G.N. Braun, Charles Day, John Palisano, Blaze McRob, Bev Vincent, Elizabeth Massie, Tim Curran and Joan De La Haye.

Your judges are Taylor Grant, John Paul Allen, G.N. Braun, Charles Day and John Palisano. All stories will be judged on merit alone, so the judges will not know whose story theyíre reading.

Will you be the winner of the very first Tales from the Lake horror writing competition?

For more information visit the competition FB page at http://www.facebook.com/Talesfromthelake or the Crystal Lake Publishing website: http://www.crystallakepub.com/competition-page.php.

To celebrate the launch, and because I just love sharing great stories, all Crystal Lake Publishing books (paperback and eBooks) have been marked down for August. All eBooks for only $2.99.

Hope to see you all there.  ;)

It sounds so interesting, I wish I liked horror. I scare easily.

Fantastic!

And I hope you get tons of entries form MWCers  :)

About 15 entries on the first day. Not bad. Not sure how many are MWCers, though. Wish I could give MWC members a straight ticket to the 2nd round or something.  ;)

If I ever figure out how to marry the murder and mayhem of my pulp fiction detectives to the macabre, I'll give you a submission. Until then, I'll just have to enjoy reading these folks who actually know how to handle the genre.  :)

Well done, Joe. Good luck with this.

Thanks, Don. Have you read John Connolly's Charlie Parker books. They might help you in that direction.  :)

If the words are good they'll need no shortcut.  If they aren't a free ride, even into the last round, wouldn't help.

Well said, Gyppo. About 30 entries so far. I'm aiming for at least a hundred, but it's still early. Hopefully everyone's polishing those opening hooks.  :)

24 days to write one paragraph. How will I ever manage such a pace?

:D It is a bit long, but hopefully this gets most writers to continue writing their stories, whether they make it into the next round or not. The main reason for the long stages is the judges are very busy writers, most of them full time pro writers, so I need to give them as much time as possible to work through all the subs. Received about 15 more today. Whoever wins this one really deserves it.

The President of the the Horror Writers Association, Rocky Wood, will write the introduction for Tales from the Lake Vol. 1.

A late entry into the TOC: Tim Waggoner

Sixty entries so far (including some familiar MWC names).

 ;)

Definitely. And what I hoped would happen is also happening, lots of Twitter and FB followers, and of course sales of our previous books. Even artists wanting to do artwork for the book, some even for free.

Hit 100 entries yesterday. I recognised a couple of midlist author and MWC members, but it really doesn't matter who wins. Whoever wins it will definitely have earned it.
Sale ends in a few days, for those with a bit of money to spend.  :D

At least there will be less stories and more things to look at with each story. They'll have the intro and the synopsis in front of them for each story.

Yip. It'll take a while for me to sort out how many votes each paragraph received and so on, but at least it's manageable. I'll definitely read the final round stories. Can't wait.

Joe's competition is reaching its final stages now. I didn't make the next round but I have a story which is sitting around, so now it no longer has to stick to a word count, it might get revamped and find a home elsewhere. :D

Thanks for making me write one, Joe.

Best of luck. ;)

Round 2 has come to an end. Only 18 stories out of the 55 round 2 batch made it through. That makes it 18 stories out of 128 entries (if my memory serves me well).  ;D

Those who missed out, there will be another one next year.  ;)
