Title: seperators
Post by: bri h on July 06, 2013, 09:50:34 AM
Can anyone tell me how to do those line seperators that look to be the same length as an underscore, but are at the same height as hyphens?
I've tried this '-', and '_' , but I can't do it any other way. I really need it. I'm sure I did it once by accident, but I can't remember, for the life of me, how I did the bugger! Bri.

An Em dash like this — you mean?

hyphen x2 like so --

word automatically takes out the space and turns it into an em dash.

You won't get them automatically on here, needs to be copied and pasted from Word or somewhere else. Most folk on here use -- to signify the same thing if they're writing a reply 'live'. ;)

In Word when you do a double hyphen, the space won't close until you type in a another word or a letter followed by a space after it.

You can do it direct, the problem is, you have to remember a 4 digit number. Press and hold the ALT key, type 0151, release ALT and bingo —  :)

Idiot here can't manage it. >:(

What, It doesn't work for you? It has to be ALT not ALT GR.

Or do you mean you can't remember 0151  :) If that's the problem try to think of it as the Scouse Dash. Imagine a Scouse with woolly hair and silly moustache spanking Ken Dodd with a giant dash. Then all you have to do is recall the STD code for Liverpool and bingo —

Well that is the kind of thing I might do ... but as it happens not this time. I assume you are using Windows not OSX? Oooo, I've just thought of something, it has to be on the numeric keypad.

Just like Mark said. . . hold down the ALT key to the left of the space bar, and while you've got it held down type — [0151 on the NUMERIC KEYPAD, not the numbers on the top row] It appears by magic once you release the ALT key —

Thanks ever so much Shvon and Guys. I had so much stuff written before I realised most of what I'd written wasn't needed. I've emptied my make—believe office bin twice this morning! ha ha. Ok, back to 1973 now. B

Er -- excuse me . . . if you had read up even earlier, the instructions were there. :P I just felt sorry for you. :o You'll notice from the time stamp that my reply was only about 30 seconds after yours went up, so you must have put it there while I was typing!

sorry shvon. No offense implied. I was trying to be funny and obviously failed. Maybe it's cos my mind is back in 73 and listening to the news of Liam Cosgrove being the new Taoiseach(I've been doing research! ha ha) Sorry again. B

Blah blah blah

Blah blah blah

Yes. MS provide a tool that lets you create your own keyboard layout, compile it and deploy it to your PC (if you are brave enough). lacking imagination MS named it ... Microsoft Keyboard Layout Creator.

The rest. I'll leave to you and Google.

...news of Liam Cosgrove being the new Taoiseach...

Speaking of which...  I remember listening to early morning radio and distinctly hearing John Major saying "Well, I spoke with the tee-shirt late last night...", and thinking to myself 'the man who runs this country talks to clothing'.  Then I realised that at least our country wasn't being run by an item of clothing.

I used to be a Radio one man
but now I'm strictly two
The Archers on Radio four?
No thanks,
there's enough drama on the tv
Then there's always radio three
classical music for me.

Now to show my stupidity with keyboard, which is shift and which is option?  :-[ :-[ :-[ I know where all the letters are.  ::) ::) ::)

Shift is the solid upright arrow key you use when you want capital letters -- on my laptop it's to the left of \

I imagine you must have something labelled 'option' somewhere. :-\

I thought shift was that one, but wasn't sure. Nope, no option.

Not only am I getting old, but my lap top seems to be too. Mine looks nothing like that. My bottom line of keys are from L to R

ctrl--fn--windows logo--alt--space-bar--a button I have no idea what it does cos the buttons missing then an image that looks like a text-box--then finally, ctrl.

That'll be because yours is Windows -- not Apple/Macintosh. ::)

Bri

The missing button ALt Gr a very very handy key when reviewing poetry. If, through regional settings, you set your pc to use an extended keyboard, you can then type é and hence cliché. The Gr in Alt Gr stands for Gallic Riting.

Touché you may say, and put that skill on your résumé, then go wild and flambé your toupée.

The Option key is also marked alt, Ma. So, for an em dash — it's Shift plus Alt plus the hyphen key, and for an en dash – it's Alt plus the hyphen key.

The size/breadth of the character in old typesetting m is slightly larger than n. ;)

Thanks shvon. Another added to the vocab warehouse.

While I've got you here, what do you think of this for a title I'm working on? Which to you seems a 'hook?'

The Little Sisters of the Poor, A Memoir

The Little Sisters of the Poor

The Little Sisters

The above being a Christian Institution for the elderly and infirm and the terminally ill. This is what I'm writing about, at the minute. I'm having so much fun with it. It's me and mine and others. I'm gonna post something of it soon, but not yet. Not till I'm sure. B

None of them, as they are all basically the title of the institution.

Maybe something like:

Living/Surviving With the Little Sisters

Nah sorry, it's not that kind of a story. Never mind, I'll just pick the best one I feel is right and run with it. Cheers.

Just give it a working title, such as 'little sisters' for now.  Something better or more resonant will probably emerge during the writing, a line or phrase that sums up the overall theme.

Cheers gyp. I'm actually leaning towards The Little Sisters cos it has a pull to it, to me. I just sought a confirmation from someone removed from it and you came through, so thanks. B
