Title: Hello again
Post by: Xerika on February 09, 2013, 08:29:46 PM
Hello, folks.

I'm not exactly a new member, but I've been AWOL for a while so I thought I should reintroduce myself.

In fact, I've been away for so long I had to Google MWC and it came up with 'Married With Children'. That was pretty scary, but I persevered anyway.

Xerika

P.S. Good to hear MWC finally did the honourable thing. What are the kids' names?

Ha, the return of the oil magnate.

Been busy pressing virgins by the name of Olive?

Welcome back

You went AWOL? Jeez, I was telling people that you were locked in the second floor bathroom.

I wonder who that actually is?

Maybe it's Eric.  MWCs Man in the Iron Mask.  Or Sarah the Striper.  Maybe it's best not to know.

Many thanks to everyone for all your messages. It was almost worth being away to get such a warm welcome back.  :D

How are you doing?

Not bad thanks, Ma, despite the austere times here in Greece. In fact, I've been doing some (slightly tongue-in-cheek  ;)) podcasts about the situation here. There's a link below if anyone's interested.

As well as that, I've been touting my novel round to agents and also some of the few publishers who still accept direct submissions. Had a few encouraging comments but no cigar so far unfortunately. Can't give up my day job as an olive farmer just yet.  ::)

P.S. Looking forward to the 'initiation'  :o

Shh.  Not allowed to talk about it, Sprocket.

Good to meet you, X  :)

... and reluctant olive farming.

I'm intrigued.  What are the specific problems connected with farming reluctant olives.  Do you have to be strict with them, or do they respond well to gentle words and soft music.  My Godmother was called Olive and she was a hard as nails.  A bit on the feral side ;-)

Thanks, V and Laura.

... and reluctant olive farming.

Gyppo, the olives are reasonably well behaved for most of the year but become particularly uncooperative at harvest time. Perhaps not surprisingly, they are reluctant to be detached from their trees as they are well aware of the fate that awaits them - crammed into sacks with thousands of other olives and then taken to a place of lawful oil extraction. Here, they will be macerated, minced, mashed and generally marmalised to create the Greek organic extra virgin olive oil that we all know and love. (Much better than that Italian or Spanish slop.)

I think you - and even your hard-as-nails godmother Olive - would be somewhat reluctant to face a similar fate, and this is why we have to beat the olives with stout sticks until they relinquish their hold on their trees. Some of the little blighters can be quite canny and get up to all manner of tricks in an attempt to avoid their oily outcome. One example of this is shown in the picture below:

Incidentally, the olive harvest isn't much fun for the harvesters either, and my own view is perhaps evident from the title of my brief podcast on this very subject - "I'd Rather Eat My Own Face" (available free of charge via the website link in my signature below).

Hi Again,

Even I have been AWOL for quite a long time. I have done it quite a few times now - become an habitual offender!  :-[

As always, I hope I don't do it again.

It has been so long since I came here that I feel everyone is new...feeling a little lost as of now, but hope to feel comfortable soon. MWC has always been warm. :)

Special hello to all the old ones who have seen me come and go.

Sugy
