Title: I have joined the kindle self publishing revolution!!
Post by: Ken100 on December 01, 2011, 05:53:11 PM
Okay, I admit it, I'm excited.
So excited that I haven't even got a book to point you to yet.
I have published my 9500 word novella 'Population:DEAD!' on the Kindle, and now I am waiting for its approval before it goes live, hopefully tomorrow.

Obviously I will notify everyone as soon as it is up for sale. 86p by the way, or for the Americans, 99c. I would have liked to initially offer it for free, but Amazon don't seem to want to encourage that, and 86p is the lowest price I could set.

If you would like to see the cover image before then, go to http://kenpreston.co.uk

Cheers,
Ken :)

Striking cover, Ken.

May the success of your novella exceed any goals you've set. :)

Thank you for your kind words, Maimi.

Striking cover, Ken.

Striking? Or lurid?  :D
Wait till you see the cover for my next one.
In fact...

Very nice cover!
Did you do it yourself?

Also, how did you find the experience of using Amazon.com to create a kindle e-book?
Any lessons learned?
Did you have to do any special formatting (or remove any unwanted formatting?)

Incidentally, on my website, funnyflashfiction.com, I have a "design the cover art project" underway. You can see my progress there.

Hi Jim,

Thank you. Yes I designed both covers myself, using photoshop and images downloaded/bought from stock image banks. I'm certainly far from being a designer, but I think I have a reasonable eye for design. Considering the price I am selling my ebooks at (86p) I consider it worth my while to do as much as I can of the publishing process.

Publishing on Amazon is relatively easy, although fairly tedious. You may have to strip out a lot of the formatting from your documents before preparing them for Kindle conversion, and then add HTML tags too.
If you have a manuscript you want to publish on Kindle then DM me and I will try and give you a fuller answer on how to do it.

Cheers,
Ken :)

I didn't find formatting too tricky. Standard TNR 12 point copy and paste. My paragraphs weren't 'tabbed' ones anyway. Only drudge was making the page breaks at the ends of the chapters and losing the header. TOC and cover page were fine, once I found the jpeg for the image I wanted to use. I followed the Kindle instructions, then completed it by going to Mobipocket to do the conversion magic. Free download. ;) ;) ;)

Ah, now, I must investigat Mobipocket. I've been doing all my HTML tags through a web editor.

It was just a straight Word doc, plain text -- the odd bit of italics and it transferred as is. All 104,000 words. ;)

Congrats! I'm doing final edits and formatting now. Just had my cover done. So, this time next week I'll have my 99-cent contribution. I'm also putting mine on Nook's B&N Site and Sony's e-book library.

Congrats to you, too. Here's wishing you every success.

I must get round to doing the Smashwords thing soon, so I can make my stuff available on more platforms.

Is Smashwords the best at crunching text into e-book format?
What are the options and how are they rated?
Any suggestions?

I've got limited experience so far. I manually tagged my word docs with html tags and then sent that to Amazon for Kindle conversion, which works great, but is a little tedious. I did get my final kindle document formatted exactly how I wanted, though. I'm going to try the smashwords meatgrinder soon with a non html document and see what comes out the other end, and how it compares with my manually formatted docs.
I'll keep you posted.

How does the tagging work in fiction?

Title: Re: I have joined the kindle self publishing revolution!!

Much like it works here, if you want to format your posts. So, for example, if you want the word HELP to appear in bold on the kindle screen, it needs tagging...

<b > HELP < /b>

I have had to put spaces in between the 'b' and the '>' because if I don't, then the MWC forum software automatically applies those tags and the word HELP becomes <b>HELP</b>

You can find lots of help on the web about HTML, but beware, it very quickly becomes complicated!!

I see.
When you mentioned tagging, my mind went to SEO instead.

Hi Ken,

I split the quoted post below from your thread so the KDP Select discussion would have its own. The KDP Select discussion is on the Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP Select) (http://www.mywriterscircle.com/index.php/topic,40953.0.html[/url) thread started by Sean Patrick Fox.

Congrats on publishing your work. Out of curiosity, have you thought about joining KDP Select? What are your views for/against it?

Thank you Deb, it is exciting.

The hard work still remains, though, of how to sell your book to people. That's the challenge, and the steep learning curve.

Cheers,
Ken :)

You're not kidding . . .

 ;D ;D

I'm still trying to get my head around how to sell a book that nobody has ever heard of, by an unknown author... Let's face it, the last thing the world needs is another novel, right?  :)

But still, there's got to be a way...

Mass hypnotism, maybe?

how do people manage to give their work away for free then?  there are plenty out there.  I want to give a book of my shorts for free to let people see how i write - then hopefully, if they like my style, they will buy my book.  I have self published both in tree book form and in kindle.  http://www.catherinebyrne-author.com

Hi Bill,
Sorry, just caught up with your post. Thank you for your feedback, I am pleased your wife enjoyed the book. For me it makes it worthwhile when I get positive feedback like this, so I really do appreciate it.

If there is any chance she could leave me a review on Amazon I would be very grateful.
If not, no worries, just pleased she enjoyed it, and thanks again for linking to my book from your website, and your encouragement and helpful comments.

Cheers,
Ken  :)

Welcome to the world of self-publishing on Amazon! If there's one online income source I like talking about most, it's definitely self-publishing on Amazon. I'm normally a pretty modest guy but I've gotta say… I rock at self-publishing!

I've increased my monthly income from nothing to nearly $2K in less than three years just from selling books on Amazon... and I was making a grand a month within a year.

The post on how I make money self-publishing has been one of the most popular on my personal blog so I wanted to update it with everything I've learned over the last few years. I've included updates on how to turn your books into a passive source of income and how to make the whole process easier.

Ok, so $2K a month isn't huge money but it's getting there and it's growing very quickly.

If you want to learn more about making money with Kindle then check out "KindleBucks.com (http://KindleBucks.com)" which is the #1 Amazon Kindle Training out there.

I can't recommend it enough. That's how I got started almost three years ago.
