Title: Conjunctions?
Post by: Dawn on November 06, 2011, 05:00:17 PM
I know you shouldn't really start a sentence with a conjunction like and or but. However, I know they have relaxed this rule a little.  Do you think though when sending into a publisher a picture aimed at 3-5 year old children that you should avoid them?

Are we talking a caption on a picture?  I'm (easily) confused.

Conjuction Junction (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mkO87mkgcNo) :D :D :D

I'd say while wearing my "publisher's hat" it's good practice to not get too relaxed from the rules.  JMO, all I have is this silly hat, I'm not really a publisher.  ;D

Mudge, loved the clip thanks. ;D

If I can give you a rough example.

Wouldn't it be funny if cats pooed?
And dogs woofed. Or should you change it to If?

 ;D ;D ;D ;D

I'm still not getting the context.  I'm dense today.   ;)

Are you saying the cats pooed as a result of the dogs barking?   :-\

Wouldn't it be funny if cats pooed if (when) dogs woofed?   ??? ???

Sorry I'm not much help so far....  :P

I think alfiemama is only worried about the sentence beginnings EG

Wouldn't it be funny if cats woofed?
And dogs chirped.

I think you need to keep it grammatically correct so

Wouldn't it be funny if cats woofed . . . [illustration following the elipsis]

and dogs chirped? [finish with the question mark. All you have done then is split the sentence]

It's ok Mudge, I'm the same. ::)
The way its written is for example, wouldnt it be funny if cats wore glasses? And dogs dressed in uniform.  So your saying if the world was a strange place.
I can't really explain it and somebody said not to broadcast  it on the internet ::)
I will go with If.  I think just to be safe.

Thanks again

I can't hear read or hear the word conjunction without the song starting up in my head.  Thanks for the link, Mudge  :D

Thanks Mudge.  The song will stay with me always (which is a good thing ;D)

Yes Sio that's what I mean.  I'm emailing over a submission, which I believe you still use double spacing, initially if you remember my verse, I had sentences beginning with And so I have changed them to If.

This is probably as clear as mud, its me, I have a sinus infection and really should go to bed ::)

I quite like starting sentences with conjunctions myself. And in a book of this nature I really don't think it would be a problem  ;)
