Title: Poetry Competition # 46
Post by: Bar on March 31, 2011, 09:05:00 AM

My encounter with Aleksander Wat's "My Century" (no, not G. Grass's!) made a lasting impact on my life. In his book (but he also wrote a great poetry), Wat recalls a disappeared world of artistic courage, of political opposition, of evil he met as a prisoner in the Stalinian camps and so much more... His exchanges with Czeslaw Milosz (a Polish poetry Nobel Prize) reach the highest levels of intellectual and spiritual communication. The meeting of those two huge minds is overwhelming, brilliant and so very moving.

This is why I chose a quote by Wat for you to read and tell, in your noblest words, what it awakes or inspires in you, or how it does not.
But it should be a poem (not a dissertation as it might hint), a great poem that shows, shares an experience, a real or made up situation, a thought, an intellectual illustration, an allegory, a concise symbolical, experimental story...

So sharpen your finest pencils, for Challenge #46 asks you to be brief. That it's a hard job I'm the first to know, but don't we learn through boundaries (I do...)?

I suggest we go for an OCTET this time, a stanza of poetry that has eight lines, or two stanzas that have four lines, or two line four stanzas...
If this is too hard, let's push off the limit to a maximum TEN LINES, freely divided... no more, though!!
It can be free verse, rhyme, tragic or accepting, humourous, sarcastic, or saturnine...

Here is the quote:

"But my life, oh, my life, had been a constant search for an enormous dream in which my fellow creatures and animals, plants, chimeras, stars, and minerals were in a pre-established harmony, a dream that is forgotten because it must be forgotten, and is sought desperately, and only sporadically does one find its tragic fragments in the warmth of a person, in some specific situation, a glance - in memory too, of course, in some specific pain, some moment. I loved that harmony with a passion; I loved it in voices, voices. And then, instead of harmony, there was nothing but scraps and tatters. And perhaps that alone is what it means to be a poet."
Aleksander Wat

Since I'd like us to have a winner by May 1, let's set the deadline for submission to April 20th.  Then TEN more days for voting.

What do you think?

I hope the subject will speak to you. It's dear to me... And I really really hope you'll be many to submit your most refined offerings and that it'll be a hell of a job to decide which is the very best!  :)

Warm regards to all and thanks for your attention and PARTICIPATION!!!

Looking forwards to your reactions,

Bar

P.S. IMPORTANT: PLEASE PM YOUR POEMS TO ME, I'LL FILE THEM ON MY COMPUTER TILL THE VOTE

This speaks to me and reminds me of the first time I read Man's Search for Meaning by Viktor Frankl.  This is definitely a challenge!

Ok, I'll enter.. Just a newbie, so be kind;

A Good Trade

Trading loneliness for love
Paying for love with longing
We held tight. We kissed deep.
We loved unafraid of the price
Enjoying, we gave each to the other
As only a man and woman who love can do
We made a Good Trade

We captured joy with abandon, how rare, how delicious
Like guests at a wonderful banquet,
Hungry and impolite, we ate as we wanted
The table; beautiful, rich with aroma and tasty
Such feasts are intended for the young,
Still, full of lust, we ate our fill
Savoring every dish, it was a very Good Trade

Years together were not enough
Plans that could never be
All words now finally silent
The price now clear; even so it was a Good trade

We chirped, like happy birds in the sun
Days filled with blissful awe of each others song
Nights spent in anticipation of the morrow, to bask in the sun and chirp again
No danger, just sheltered moments stolen in embrace
My God! It was a Good Trade

Our banquet finished, with dishes in the cupboard
The feast we shared fades into a meadow of memories
Sweet it is, to recall those moments with resigned longing
To want what cannot be had again
No more words, no more chirping, no more songs

Trading loneliness for love
Paying for love in longing
It was a Good Trade,
One I would make a thousand times

The rule is that a poem which is posted publicly is ineligible for the competition, because the comps are always done in confidence to keep the identity of any of the poets secret until the vote is done.  This is why Bar told everyone to send their poems by personal message (PM) to her.

Correct me if I'm wrong, Mark.

StevePre, welcome on our boards!
I'm so sorry, you must have misunderstood the rules of the Competition, you could still post your poem in a thread on Review My Poetry or Poetry Workshop for comments/help/opinion, but I can't accept it for the Competition, 1/because by posting it in THIS thread you made it public, 2/because, according to this competition rule, the poem a)is to be inspired by my quote above and b)not exceed TEN lines!!!
I think you just got lost in MWC's maze, but now you'll know! So if you are interested, please do read the theme for COMPETITION #46 and if it inspires you, do write a poem and send me through PERSONAL MESSAGE - just as ERIC guided you!
Sorry again, hope to count you among the candidates!!!!! Best of all, Bar

This is a sonnet I wrote last year for an essay that had to be a bout something that inspired us. I chose my frog filled, bug infested pond. I am new to this so all advice will be appreciated  :).

STORM

Silver crystal lake 'neath still moon nights,
Insects turning slowly in the breeze,
Rippled waters flow through lowly lights,
Shivering coldly, now with knocking knees.

A quickly felt stir near a long pond reed,
A pounce, a noise, silence once again,
Through gray and solemn clouds clear water bleeds,
Clear turned to dun across the dull terrain.

Bright light it filters through the 'wakened dawn,
Clouds depart from morn to hazy dusk,
As they return they come with silence torn,
Sharp bolts like arrows start a sorrowful task.

But as dawn nears a dismal wavy sea,
There is one place I'd rather not now be.
 :'( :'( :'(

wyv220!!!!! do you guys read? please post your Sonnet in Review My Poetry or Workshop, not in the Competition thread! you'll get all your chances to be appreciated if you post it in the right place!!!! I.e. create your own, new thread with "STORM" for its title, copy your poem into the body of the first thread's post! good luck...

actually, bar dear, they probably also shouldn't post their poems in the regular boards either.  no public display prior to the comp.  ask Amie or Mark if you need verification of that.  if you write me I will give you a further review of your poems.

of course now they can post these two, since the poems are disqualified already.

On a wave
white horses cascading
I surfed
on my board, bored
sharks below, and hawks above
the harmony of smaller hawks
that nestled above baby hawks
and miniature sharks
eating shark eggs
making french toast
with
imaginary eggs
I was that egg
but I was a good egg
wondering if I came first
or if I was
but
a chicken with a pen
who couldn't read
listening to a Bar
screaming and Eric
tittering.
Sorry Bar.  ;D

Did I Win???  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

If you are talking about entering the Poetry Competition, you can't use the one you've already posted on the board. Why? because now anyone will know you wrote it.

The idea behind the competition is not only choosing the best via members vote, but that no one will know who wrote any of the submissions until after the votes have been cast.

If you wish to write something else, please do - but Do Not post it on the boards. Instead, click on this link:
http://www.mywriterscircle.com/index.php?action=profile;u=22000
it will take you to Bar's profile page. Down at the bottom of the page you'll see a blue line that say Send this member a personal message.
Click on that blue line and a new text box will open up.

In the subject line of that text box, put Poetry Competition # 46,

then copy and paste you poem into the text box and click send.

Your name will automatically be added to your PM (personal message), so Bar will be the only one who know which member wrote each poem and the voting will be about the work itself, not the person who did the writing.

Hope this helps,
Alice

wyve, if you wish to receive comments on your poem in this section of the MWC, click on Review My Poetry, then, above the list of posted poem, on your right, you can click on New Topic, it will open an empty window. There - paste your poem, put the title in the title line and you'll see people will give their opinion. Your title will appear first on the list. It just has to be in a proper place. Good luck and see you on the boards! Bar

bar's feeling ill, i don't know how she managed to get out that last post, so on her behalf I am going to announce here and now the first MWC poetry comp Lottery.  Yes, I am going to start a lottery at this very moment and all the forthcoming entries are eligible to win $1,000,000 in a drawing at the end of the comp, payable by me to the lucky winner.  (prize to be paid in Uranian dollars, cash value $.00000001)

Best to you all and - eric - thanks again for your devoted help!!! please continue. I'll help you pay THEM.  :D

fowf!  (*fanning self*) you make it sound like a bribe!  OK, what the heck, I will pay 50,000 Uranian dollars to the first 3 persons who submit a poem (that's 16,667 U.D. each), so dig deep!

in reality though bar, it is too early to expect massive entries.  give them all another week or so.  but the early bird captures the worm!  or in this case your share of an outlandish Uranian entry prize!

alright eric, I should be patient. but just notice how advantageous my lack of patience is for you!
Now --- I wait for more - PATIENTLY.

IMPORTANT: you can still tinker your sent poems! just deliver the revision before April 20!!

I am doubling the prize for the fourth and fifth entries.  33,400 Uranrian dollars for the next two.  In the interests of full disclosure, that is about 3 cents for each, which is far less than a quid.  I have no idea what a quid is anyway.  You may have to accept a three cent poem for payment.  Transmission costs and all that, you know.

The Uranian dollar has been devalued to .0000000000001 $USD.  This is good news and bad news.  It will help the tourist industry on Uranus.  But all the lucky prize winners in this promotion will be out the window.

The last prize winner will be #6, which has yet to be submitted.  I can offer a consolation prize of one fish.  But I don't have any fish, so the lucky winner will have to go out and get one on their own with their own fishing line or money.  Sorry for the inconvenience, but keep those poems coming!  Bar lives for successful comps, and we don't want to disappoint her now do we?
