Title: Writing buddies
Post by: sonofdenis on September 09, 2008, 01:55:59 AM
I've always been a little sceptical about writing buddies, but the more I think about the more it seems like quite a sensible thing to do.  In the early draft stage, anyway.

Can anyone recommend a good site for finding a writing buddy?  Indeed, is anyone interested from MWC?

I'm less interested in a writing buddy than someone who can edit my stuff well. I rely on acquaintances to get my work up to snuff.

I'm afraid with a writing buddy, the seam between our work would be evident. Do two people really write prose so similarly that a reader wouldn't be able to tell the difference?

I have a friend who has written a couple of books with his friend. I've team written and love it. We agreed on the basic story idea, no outline, then each took a character and wrote for our character. We wrote until it seemed the place for the other character to take over the story telling. It was such fun. We bounced off each other.

If you have ever been to camp and played that story telling game where each person contributes, but has to work off of what the person before them added, then you get the idea of what we did. I would do it again in a heartbeat. I do think that it made a difference that we were equal in our writing abilities and not control freaks.

You might give it a try. If nothing more, use it as a writing exercise.

I'm more interested in a kind of read and review quid pro quo rather than being part of a writing 'team'.  A mutually beneficial learning process, if you get my meaning.

Thanks for pointing out the link on the review my work page, Cathy C.  Rather dim of me to have missed it!

I have a great critique partner (a writing buddy, if you will), and we pass chapters back and forth for review. It's extremely helpful, and I lucked out to find her. It's been immeasurably helpful, and we support each other through the times when we both get down and out. Good luck!

Have you tried the critique circle? http://www.critiquecircle.com/ I'm a moderator there, and use it to get feedback on my novels before submitting. My main writer buddy I met there and now we also have a blog together. Good luck!  :)

Oh thank you for reminding me.  I love that forum and have abandoned it for far too long.
