Title: Fire-flys Magnigicant Adventure.
Post by: fire-fly on May 23, 2008, 06:10:47 AM
Hi Everybody,  ;D

As you have all probably read all over the forum, Brett and I are leaving on Tuesday to travel up north for the winter.  ;D

A number of beautiful writers on MWC have indicated they would love to travel with us, if only by photos and tales of our adventures.

Soooo we hope to keep you all thrilled and enthralled as we travel from the Hunter Valley (NSW) up to Darwin, (NT) across to Broome, (WA) and back down through the Red Centre. Ayres Rock is to be one of our stops and my darling man has these images of us climbing this bloody great big monolithic stone to take pictures of the Olgas etc from the top.  ::)

Well, those of you who have talked to this little Fly all know I am scared of heights  :o :o so why would I want to do that???

I hope we can keep you entertained but we will only be on line once, maybe twice a week and I can already feel the MWC withdrawals setting in.  :'( :'(

I will now attempt to post a couple of photos from our last trip, to give you an idea of what we will be seeing. OK Tim, lets see if I was able to shrink the little suckers, if not you will hear me yell HELP>  ;)

Nothing soothes withdrawals like ice cream :)

Pictures, FF, bring pictures of you climbing those monolithic stones and being all Indiana Jones! ;D ;D ;D Don't tell me you purchased a whip and a hat, too.

If this photo works, its about the termite nests they have in the Norther Territory. I will attempt to load a photo of one of them with some friends standing next to it.

The above is a link to the photo I have been trying to post. This is not a magnetic termite nest, just the everyday garden variety.  ;)

The termite pic came through,(that thing must be over twenty feet high!) but not the fish which I assume was meant to be with your otherwise cryptic statement.

I see you've worked out how to put pictures into the message rather than as an attachment.

Oh buggar Gyp, I will go back and give it another go. I could not reduce the size of my attachments to the 250mb limit so Thatguy showed me another option but I'm struggling with it a bit.  :P

The termite nests are an amazing sight and one person can push them over, they just seem to sit on top of the ground. The little suckers even eat tyres, what a great save for the environment if we could harness that little bit of nature.  :o

Hi FF,

Hope you enjoy the trip, and keep us posted. I've been toying withthe idea of visiting Ayer's Rock myself for some while now, but that will have to wait until Norway and Iceland are out of the way. Just one thing; your question:

so why would I want to do that???

Because it's there!

 ;D ;D

Cheers,

Dave.

Hi Dave

Brett has been to the Rock before and I have attached a photo of the climb. He rekons the size of the thing just blows your mind. Don't stop at the Rock though, keep going, its all amazing.

Brett took this photo around 10am in June and the Rock is 9klm around the base and 450mtrs high. Geographically, it is the centre of Australia. When you stand on top of it, you can see the curviture of the Earth on the horizon.

Okay FF, I have to see that. Climb the rock, take the photo and send it to me. I was born in the Mojave Desert - home of The Flat Earth Society. I suspect they are related to the same group that claims the moon landing was staged in a studio.

The sky is so blue there. When you pack your bags and get to the D's don't forget to pack your DGSquared. 8) :-* :-* :-*

Only two more sleeps now Cathy.  :o

I have to get motivated enough to move today, its bloody cold here I can tell you.

I will be putting some on over the course of the trip. The few I put up already are from our last trip up there and a couple from a previous trip of of Bretts. (ones of the Rock).

Thanks Cath and see you when we get back. I will miss everyone heaps.  :'( :'( ThatGuy gave me icecream for my withdrawals, she says that helps everything.  ;D

I would love one of those. Brett has a memory and quotes dates from years ago. If I don't write it down, don't ask me what I had for breakfast.  ::)

Hi Guys,

The magnificant adventure is going great and at the moment we are in a small caravan park drinking bourbon and stealing internet from god knows where. We have travelled 1,100klms since yesterday morning and seen heaps of road kill and not much else yet. Dead kangaroos, wallabies, FOXES and wombats have been lying every 100mtrs or so. It breaks my heart, wombats are my faves. I will attempt to post a photo if I can, the service is very weak, can't expect too much when its stolen from who knows where.  ;D ;D

This is our home away from home for the next ten weeks. Its dry, warm and off the ground, so its like the Ritz Carlton to us.  ;D

We have travelled the 1100 klms and still have anothe 3000klms till we hit Darwin. We stay there for about a month all up as there is so much to see. We had to stop at the fire station on the way out to roster our phones off. We would receive every callout through our mobiles otherwise and that would really suck.  ;D ;D

Miss you guys so be good and will log on another day.  :-*

Hi Guys,

Crocodile chips and salad was quiet enjoyable but if you are ever offered camel kebabs, take my advice and decline. They taste rather yukkie.  :P

Everything else has been amazing so far, we looked through the world war two tunnels today and that was interesting. Swimming yesterday at Litchfield national Park was brilliant and heaps of fun.

Miss you guys chatting all the time though, we can only hit and run with the internet at the moment.

This photo was taken at the falls. My daughter and Brett were under the falls when we were snapping. Its one hundred and thirty five steps down to it.

The following tells you a bit about using camels for food.  I suspect the taste rather depends on the age of the beast when slaughtered.  Old camel is probably pretty damned tough and stringy.

Hi FF! Loving the photographs mate. Looks and sounds like you are having the time of your life. How is the tent trailer working out? We are getting geared up for our two week family road trip but we will be tenting it. We like pitching our tent in the obscure nooks and crannies that no trailer dare to venture in to.  :o Though I must say, in the rain - I think I'd rather be in a tent trailer. Do you like it better than the cozy tent?

A treat in the mail has gone into a place of honor in my scrapbook. ;)

The white pelicans are beautiful. Ours are brown but the white ones make a beautiful contrast to the blue of the sky and water next to the gray of the rocks.

Will you be visiting Steve Irwin's neck of the woods? My son is/was a huge fan of his and was heart broken when he died a few years ago.

I've been thinking of you and in the spirit of adventure, am riding on your shoulder, beside the angels, with a view.  :-* :)

Love ya,
~Deb

Hi Guys

We are having the time of our lives and this country just gets better. I will check that site out Gyp, I hope its a kind one. That camel was foul, makes me hesitant to try the possum now.  ???

Have to get time to read Ma's new story and get onto the Pirate Ship again but the days are all a blur. I have been eaten by sandflies (midgies) and am on antibiotics to stop the infection. Yuko. We took Johnie, my daughter, on the jumping crocodile boat trip and the next night we watched a movie called Rogue. Glad I didn't watch it before we went, its very life like in the places we went.

The photo of this croc is the big six metre croc called Agro. They estimate he is around 900kilos and was on the bank. They just beach the flat bottom punt style boat and let you go on the bow and photograph him. He was about twenty feet away. They fed around ten crocs that day and they have names for the lot as they do this trip three times a day and I guess they get to know them a bit.

Hi Guys,

Yes that croc had all sorts of thoughts going through its head I can guarantee. The guide informed us they use 85% of their brain and can plan things in advance. They go through 45 sets of teeth in their lifetime and once they use them all, their ass is grass, they can live without limbs but not teeth. Their tails propel them to jump as in this next photo. Its all very interesting.

Glad you got the snail mail Ma, ignore my PM ok.

We stayed at a place called Mattaranka Springs which has all natural artisian water and is usually quiet warm. The spot was amazing with peacocks wandering around the site and so peaceful. After dark, I could hear things hopping and thought it was frogs so went out to photograph them only to find these ghastly cane toads. They were introduced into Queensland to try and rid the sugar cane beetle  but have instead multiplied beyond control and everything that eats one dies. Even fresh water crocs are not immune to the poison and all our real frogs are disappearing as well.

We pulled up in Darwin and made our bed and this little real frog was in the covers. I think he wanted to escape the can toad and have a chance for life.

My last photo for today is more wildlife and this one you will like Gyppo.

This bird is called a Bustard and is one of our largest birds. He is a flying bird but very big. They are around the outback and don't see them a lot but this trip we found a heap.

Hope everyone is well and I miss this place heaps.

We head to Kakadu tomorrow to show my daughter around for a few days and we leave Darwin to head to WA next Wed or Thurs.

RD, we are on a long trip and are not due back home until 5th of August. Its a long time without talking to you guys. Wheres Hunter, he is only a guest now?

Wearing my writing hat for  minute...  If the owners of the Jumping Croc boat has a body to get rid of, or someone they really wanted to terrify, then a private night trip might be in order...

Gyppo - always interested in new ways to tidy up an inconveneient corpse ;-)

The window of my den looks out onto my back yard.  Twenty yards back from my deck, a tree and shrub-covered berm separates me from my neighbor.  The sun has just set and in the darkness, the fire flies are out in force, singing for the aurally-challenged.

Of course, the light show made me think of our own FF, so we hope you're having a great time, girl.  Check in when you can.

Thanks Don

We are having an amazing time guaranteed. I am at the moment in an internet kiosk and I am sitting next to a freaking mong. The ride on the croc boat right now would make me happy.  ::) :o

Gyp, funny you should say that, right where the croc tour runs, there is a bridge across the river and a couple of ingenious young me who killed two ladies of the night, threw the weighted bodies over the bridge to be consumed by the hungry crew. But the crocs there are too well fed and passed up the offering, leading to the two corpse find and a conviction.  ;D ;D I love that story, nothing is ever as easy as it seems. How is everyone by the way?

Hi T

We are having a mighty fine time and we leave Darwin on Thusday. I'm excited about that because everything we see from then on will be new to us both. We have been here a few times and love it, but are getting itchy feet thats for sure.

We went to a place called Twin Falls and were lucky enough to be there while the third one was in action. It usually dries before the tourist season so you don't get to see it often. Jim-Jim Falls was the next, but it was not as nice. It was only a 900metre walk and it took nearly two hours.  :o :o More a mountain climb, over boulders and around the side of the mountain, I had a blast.

I will try to post a couple of photos now. I am in an internet cafe again and they leave a lot to be desired in Oz  ::) The first photo is a swimming hole we went to called Buley Rock Pools in Litchfield National Park. Too bloody cold for me but Johnie and Brett had a go. :o

The Adelaide River is hugh and we decided to pull into a little parking area with a boat ramp and have a look see. This young aboriginal couple were catching dinner and that is a shark in his hands and its still alive. That was their dinner for the night. They were the funniest two we have encountered, he was a comedian and such lovely people.

These guys only fish with a hand line, you can see it on the ground. They pull in stingrays and crabs with this as well.

We did have one bad encounter in our first week I don't think I have told you guys about.

We were driving along and seen some road kill ahead and heaps of birds. They fly away when you get close and theres always one that lingers. This day it was a hugh wedge tail eagle and we hit the bit thing. It took a hundred metres to pull up on the dirt and I ran back to check it out but it was in its last moment. It was the most beautiful creature and its so hard to avoid the impact on the dirt and towing as well.  :'( :'(

Maybe they do for sure Sune, its not that hard to hit things worse luck.

Watch out for that contract Gyp, its pre-paid and all.  :o

I was in a bit of a dither with that spot I was at so I will try and find a couple more.

We left Darwin today and at present we are at Katherine and its a dump. I have been here a few times and it gets no better but the van park we are at is pretty cool.

The temp is expected to drop to 10'C tonight and thats a real cold snap. Its 6.55pm and still daylight and shorts and tshirts are the order of the day.

The Top End of Oz don't have normal seasons, they have wet and dry. I think the temp sits around 33'C all year round but their spring is what is called the build up here. This is when the humidity builds up to saturation point as the storms form. They call it troppo or suicide season as many people cannot handle it. Once the Wet season begins, the humidity seems to ease as it is then monsoon time. The wet season is summer than it goes onto the Run Off. This indicates the rain has eased and the flood waters recede and the fishing is at its best in these two seasons. The Run Off is autumn. This leads into the Dry season which is really winter. This is the time when the rain and humidity are gone and its just amazing weather. Although it is hot and I hate the heat, its not unbearable.

Well thats the weather session for today guys, I will go look for some photos.

You have to look hard to see this little fella, I took it for Johnie. Its a little sandcrab around the size of your little finger nail and they come out in the thousands at low tide. We were walking along the beach and even over the roar of the ocean, we could hear a scurrying noise and it was these and tiny hermit crabs. We didnt have the camera so I went back after she left to get pictures, but not many around.

A slow and rough way to travel but looked like fun.

When you cross the WA border from the NT, you pass into a quarantine area and have to hand over any fresh fruit, vegies, honey and believe it or not, hession bags. They have a hugh agricultural industry here and are trying to avoid contamination from other states. The only problem I see with this is its not advertised that this needs to be done and caught a lot of people off guard. We were lucky having read about it before coming here.

Great pics f-f. Thanks again for sharing.

I was caught out at the Algerian/Tunisian border. Tunisia would not allow importation of Algerian dates. I found out that the Algerian date is susceptible to infection from some parasite or other. When shown what was inside I threw the lot away. I'd been blissfully eating dates throughout my time in Algeria, but after that eye opener I was far more cautious.

I'm not sure if the ban is still in place, this happened over 20 years ago.

Back to civilisation and time to add a couple of photos.

We visited a place yesterday in Derby WA called the Vertical Waterfalls. They work because of the narrow gap between these two cliffs and the tidal move is 1.5 mtrs an hour. When it rushes back it, its at a million litres a second through the cavity. They take you through in a boat and its a real rush. Get there in a sea plane.

Another boab tree but with a difference.

This one was used as an overnight prison for aboriginal prisoners back in the 1900's. The tree itself is 1500 years old. They must all be hollow and the nuts off the tree are carved by the aboriginals and are amazing.

Sooooo you two are out "floatin boats" ay. Mmmmm I will ponder that one, in the mean time, Snap has a handle and is on the way.  ;D ;D

Brett helped glue it and when you finished, he has an ex who might want to use it for a week or two.  :o :o

We are off today to a place today called Barn Hill Station to camp on the beach which is on the edge of the Indian Ocean. We watched the sun go down over Cable Beach last night and Brett informed me we were the last place in Oz to see the sun set for the day. Pretty cool I think.  ;D

When we finish there we will head back to the NT and the desert and go find that bloody big rock stuck out there somewhere.  :-\

We are going to Wolfe Creek Meteroite Crater first, that will be amazing for sure. Its the second largest in the world. :o :o

I'm intrigued by one part of this sign, 'no unleaded petrol'.

Does this simply mean that unleaded is not available, or that it is actually banned?  If the latter, why?

Gyppo

PS:  Geriatric?  Some days it feels that way ;-(

Oh Gyp, I never meant you were geriatric, just thought it was great to see these really old mates doing it there way and enjoying it.  ;D

Unleaded petrol is banned in a lot of Indigenous Communities as the kids get high sniffing it and it has caused a lot of deaths in some communities. They have even gone to the extent of developing a less lethal fuel specifically for these regions to reduce the effects.  :o

Ma, Gunga is dope, weed, marijuna (spelling). Just another way to try and clean the communities up.  ???

See what a wonderful forum this is.  Ma has learned that gunga is just a local variation on Ganja, and I've learned that you can get high by sniffing unleaded petrol.  This gives a whole new layer of meaning to the term 'Petrolhead'.

I remember once getting as high as a kite  - quite inadvertently - on the fumes from a model aircraft engine i was 'running in' in my shed.  Methanol with 20% nitro-methane.  Too much exhaust fumes from that stuff gives you a killer headache.

I had the engine securely bolted to a chunk of timber, but the timber itself was only anchored to a leg of the workbench with a solitary four inch nail whacked in a couple of inches deep.  At around 20,000rpm the vibrations were enough to loosen the nail, and both wood and engine broke free and bounced wildly around the shed floor until the tough nylon propellor finally dug inself into the crack where the wall met the dirt floor and finally stalled.

Dodging that cavorting little lump of screaming mayhem whilst half-blinded by dust and terror  was - although as a fourteen year old I had no idea what lay ahead of me - excellent training for an arena gladiator.

For future runs I screwed the wood to the bench.

Three cheers for Guardian Angels...  Mine had certainly earned his/her keep over the years ;-)

Post by: Gyppo on July 17, 2008, 06:02:12 AM
I'm still tickled by the thought of Firefly 'nicking bits of internet'. I can picture the pickup ghosting through some little township in the small hours and pulling up alongsde any building with an unsecured wireless connection.  The two masked 'broadband bandits' smiling at each other in the dim light. Firefly sitting there in the darkness of the cab, illuminated only by the light from her screen as she deftly sends a few messages she has prepared earlier, and then having a quick scan across the boards at MWC.

Then a house door or window bursting open as someone realises what is happening.  Brett flooring the accelerator and roaring off into the darkness as a shotgun blasts and a shout of "Thieving Bloody Drongoes!" follows them.

And in the shadows the restless spirit  of Ned Kelly knocks back a 'Tube' of Fosters and laughs his non-corporeal head off, to land with a faint ghostly thud on the dirt road...   "Strewth!  I hope I can find the bugger and finish my beer before the rest of the gang find it and start playing Footie."

Well you lot have a real high opinion of us lonely travellers don't ya.

We have been trying for a couple of hours to get back on this site but the buggars must be using their connection as well and that has slowed it even more.

Often wonder though Gyp if they can twig to us being on here. We try to tip toe but sometimes we get excited and want it all and the end drops out and we have to start all over again.

Brett wants you to know he drinks XXXX Gold Gyp. Some mid strength crap from Queensland I think. No one in Oz drinks Fosters, we sell it overseas to those with no taste buds at all.

Trying to book in for a camel ride tomorrow evening and dinner after, should be fun if it comes off.

We found a dead camel on the Tanami Road the other day. A car load of kids hit it in the dark and two lost their lives as a result.

When my daughter's fellow, Simon, comes visiting he can usually find an unsecured connection.  We think it belongs to the photographer up the road.  My immediate neighbour is real techno-geek and we rather doubt he'd settle for an unsecured connection.  Barry is the kind of bloke who'd block himself just to prove he could.  The photographer, by her own admission, only knows just enough to get by, but has a 'nice fat broadband connection' for when she needs to send a few hundred pictures after a commercial shoot.

Simon says he can tell when a connection is in use, so presumably the genuine owner can also tell if someone else is using it.

Fosters:  I've heard other Australians, including barmen, say the same, but I still think it would be okay for Ned Kelly's ghost.

Ninny, you will have sore legs if you stay crossed for too long.  :P When I get back I will bake you a cake and we will have the planned re-union.  8)

Any flavour you like RD, quick as a flash. ;D ;D

Orpheus we are having the best time. There is so much to see and the gates are just a small part.  ;D ;D ;D

We have seen so much wildlife including the usual kangaroos and wombats, emus and bustards but also wild camels and dingoes, snakes, spiders of the strangest kinds than we get into the human animal. Plenty of weird ones of those I can assure you.  :o :o :o

There is a place in Darwin where you can stand in knee deep water and hand feed fish that suck on you fingers and swim under waterfalls that are a hundred feet high. I jumped into the pond (very bravely I might add, I dont swim  :o ) and it was so cold it took my breath away. I swam ten feet or so and it was like bath water with the thermal spring that ran down the side of the mountain.

There has been crocodile safaris and boat rides through the Horizontal waterfalls and even a ride on a sea plane. We have had a total blast and its been unreal having all you guys join in our fun.  ;D ;D

The night of the dust storm, we stayed in this motel. We had the van close as you can see, to run a power lead into the fridges. In the night with the noise of the wind, some "locals" knocked of gear from the back of the ute. We also have a fridge in there with fruit and veg, water, pepsi and alcohol. Get this guys, they took all the fruit and veg out, knocked off all the pepsi and alcohol and REPLACED all the fruit and veg. Bizarre.  :o :o :o :o

My most amazing adventure has come to an end.  :'(

We pulled into the driveway at 2pm today, very pleased to see our own bed and all the children. (pets included )

Thanks to all you lot who travelled with us and I will post more photos as the days go by.

Everyone at home is working towards good health and enjoyed the gifts bestowed upon them.  ;)

Yeah Gyp, all in a row, about five or six camels I think, and two on each.  ;D

Our camels name was Partner and he had raced the week before in the Alice Springs Cup and came third so he was a goer.  :o :o :o

They lumber along so peacefully, but a sore bum is the end story.  ???
