Title: Hello people!
Post by: thatLous on April 14, 2008, 05:49:14 AM
Hi! How's everybody in the board?  :)

Well, to be honest I don't know how to start. I haven't been in a community board for a while, so I kind of forgot how 'hellos' go about in one. I hope that this message won't be too long...

To start off I'll just mention that I have known this community for a while, having signed up for 'Trente Steele's Writer's Newsletter', which mentions some articles and topics of discussion from this community and such. I've been an avid listener of 'Writer's FM' for... I guess... two months now. I had just recently downloaded Nick Daws' latest interview and after listening to it for a third time I finally decided, after years of hesitating, to finally quit being a ghost in the community and sign up!

I've been writing for years now, but I have never jumped out of the rookie stage yet. That doesn't matter, though, since I've always loved to write for the sake of writing. Heck, I'll be happy to write without getting paid at all! As long as I get to share the story in me, I'll be happy. Writing's a sort of pleasure that's like a... a barnacle or something, and I'm glad that I'm with loads of people who feel the same, now. It's usually just the three of us sitting around our geeky, book worm table, speaking gibberish and all. It's a destructive obsession, I'm afraid. I'm supposed to be writing an important report right now (hahah).

Umm-- I'm fond of writing horror and humor. Stories that are usually unconventional or weird, or sometimes just plain macabre without going too much on the gory side. I'm fond of exploring the concept of immorality (there's nothing scarier than stealing candy from your school canteen! Honestly!). Now you all might think that I'd be weird when you get to meet me personally, but it is far from the truth: I am socially awkward, and tend to say stupid, idiotic things from the top of my head instead.

I'm looking forward to learning more from everybody in this community, and I hope that I get to help others too... if I could, of course (well-- if not I'll just have to give everybody cookies).

Agh, I hope I didn't write too much in this post. I did... did I? (sorry)

Well, just an insight to who ThatGuy is. See you, everyone, and glad to have finally joined this friendly community.

Hey there, Steve08!

Woah... is that one of Oscar Wilde's pictures? I can't see it clearly... but I'd know that pose well.

Hi, thatGuy and welcome to MWC.

Glad to know there's someone else out there with 'foot in mouth' disease. ;D

Cookies!!! Man, you know the way to our hearts already. ;)

Here's the formal bit:

We don't have many rules here but please, do take a few moments to check out our etiquette guidelines (click this link:

There are also 'stickies' at the top of each board, which should answer any questions you have about posting in the different areas.

Anything you are unsure off, just ask - there is always someone willing to help.

Ah, yes, the 'foot in mouth' disease. The dreaded thing has a name, after all  :-X No cure yet, eh?

And thanks a lot for the welcome, CATHY C! I'll make sure to know the rules by heart. A cookie for you *gives virtual cookie*

Yep, it's the great Oscar himself :)
Looking forward to seeing your work, mate :)

I can't say that I'm an expert of Oscar Wilde, but I do have to say that I am enamored by him already because of his 'The Picture of Dorian Gray'. I will never finish that book. Ever. Silly, I know, but it's sort of like 'making the moment stay forever' kind of thing.

And ditto! I'm currently checking out 'The Man of Sorrows', and I do have to say, it tickles me! Pulls at my heartstrings and all. Hope to see more from you...

^Surely the sign of a good book^  :)

'ello ThatGuy,

I like your quote, so I offer you this one:

TWENTY YEARS FROM NOW YOU WILL BE MORE DISAPPOINTED BY THE THINGS THAT YOU DIDN'T DO THAN BY THE ONES YOU DID DO. SO THROW OFF THE BOWLINES. SAIL AWAY FROM THE SAFE HARBOUR. CATCH THE TRADE WINDS IN YOUR SAILS. EXPLORE. DREAM. DISCOVER.
MARK TWAIN

Welcome Friend (that phrase remonds me of the original Spiderman theme),

Thanks for the welcome thatollie and simonjjames!

By the way, that quote reminds me of my dream to quit my job when I turn 30 to go 'round the world. Or something along those lines. Maybe without the... quitting... thing...   :P

(the 'welcome friend' phrase? If that's what you meant, it kinda reminds me of Lord of the Rings...)

It reminds me of Spiderman because the lyrics went:

'...welcome friend, he's ignored,
Action iiiiisssss...his reward, TO HIMMMMMMMM,
Life is a great big haaaaang-up,
wherever there's a haaaaang-up,
You'll find the SPIDERMAAAAAAN.'

So.  There we go.

Hmmm.

Thank you for that, Si. I've often pondered on the theme lyrics of such shows as the one mentioned above, the Flintstones, Top Cat & many, many more. The producers seem to commission themes that are sung at 500mph, complete with bizarre lyrics; it's either subliminal brainwashing...or I'm just deaf. ;D ;D

I've studied them at great length, Steve. I'm trying, in my own little way, to become an expert.

For example:
Quote
Top Cat!
The most effectual Top Cat!
Who's intellectual close friends get to call him T.C.
Pro-vid-ing it's with dignity.

Top Cat!
The indisputable leader of the gang.
He's the boss, he's a pip, he's the championship.
He's the most tip top,
Top Cat.

And:
Quote
Flintstones. Meet the Flintstones.
They're the modern stone age family.
From the town of Bedrock,
They're a page right out of history.

Let's ride with the family down the street.
Through the courtesy of Fred's two feet.

When you're with the Flintstones
you'll have a yabba dabba doo time.
A dabba doo time.
You'll have a gay old time.

I am yet to have a gay old time, however.

Having studied those very, very odd lyrics, complete with their incredibly extended syllables, I am forced to conclude that they were written by the Wyrd sisters from Macbeth, or Elton John's songwriting partner. ;D

And here I thought that The Beetles were behind them (then again I thought they wrote all the songs in those days).

I was the one who wrote the Transformers and the Captain America theme, by the way.

Thanks for the welcome, guys!

And simonjjames, I still don't know what that means (and I therefore feel embarrassed upon revealing myself to be the oldest young person ever to have existed on the face of this earth).

I believe it's something that the London Youths used to say quite a while back but I have no idea what they say now.  They could all have adopted the language from Clockwork Orange by now for all I know.
